Building exterior

Seniors

This is certainly not the senior year everyone had planned for, but there are still many ways we can celebrate our wonderful Class of 2020. Friends of Jones generously provided each graduate a yard sign, which can be picked up at school. We are also planning a Virtual Graduation Celebration, which is explained later in this letter. In the meantime, we have some important senior business that needs to be completed.

Senior Check-out
The senior check-out process which starts next week on Monday, June 8.  A letter was mailed out to all families with the specific information, and it is attached here as well for your reference.  Some key points to remember regarding the senior check-out:
  • You are required to attend the check-out process only during your scheduled time, no exceptions. Due to the pandemic, students must attend during their scheduled time to meet staffing requirements and to evenly distribute the number of students in the building.  The schedule is listed at the following link: Senior Check-Out Process
  • All students are required to wear a face mask.  You will not be permitted in the building without a face mask and we will not provide one for you.  Please plan accordingly.
  • We can no longer accept personal checks for payments to your account.  Any remaining amount on your student account must be paid with a credit card, cash, or money order.

More information about the senior check out process can be found at the following link Senior Check-Out Process, or on the attached letter that was sent out on May 15.  If you did not receive this mailing and need a copy of your account statement and/or property checked out to ensure it is completely returned, please send an individual email to Mr. Voigt at jvoigt@cps.edu.  Please include in the subject line "Account Statement and Property List for    Student Name   "

Graduation Celebrations 2020
Drive-Through on June 14
We have some great news! CPS has reversed its ban on in-person graduation events: WE ARE RESTARTING OUR "DRIVE-THROUGH" CELEBRATION FOR THE CLASS OF 2020! Due to this change, we need to move the "drive-through" graduation to the afternoon of Sunday, June 14.  Families will arrive in their cars, using the Legacy parking lot directly across from school, then drive up to the front of the South Campus building where the graduate will be able to step out of the vehicle, receive their diploma cover and have their picture taken by a professional photographer. Please note that, by CPS and state rules, no one else is allowed to leave their vehicles and gather on the parking lot or sidewalk. In order to plan accordingly for the drive-through graduation celebration, families that plan to attend must register by June 5, 2020, at 7:00 PM. This is mandatory and if you do not register, we will not have a spot available for you on the day of the ceremony. Unfortunately, due to the new senior check-out, we will not have enough time to organize the event using cap & gown photos uploaded to the event registration.

City-Wide Virtual Ceremony on June 14
CPS will be presenting a city-wide virtual graduation event at the same time as the Jones drive-through graduation. The city-wide program was just announced last week after our drive-through celebration planning was well underway.  We have been informed that the city-wide virtual graduation will be shown at later times and will be available on-demand, so there will be no need to miss either event. CPS will be sending out further information.

Jones Virtual Ceremony on July 7
We will still be holding our virtual graduation celebration on Tuesday, July 7, at 7:00 pm.  Our virtual graduation will include many of the same elements we would have had in our traditional graduation ceremony, while also providing an opportunity for each graduate to wear their cap and gown and record a personal message. Each graduate's picture will appear and their names will be announced. Seniors will be receiving information on how to record and upload their messages, along with other important details of the event.  This will be a great way for the Class of 2020 to share their graduation celebration with family and friends.

Graduation Yard Signs
Seniors began picking up their graduation yard signs this week, and they are sprouting up all over Chicago. Sign pick-up will continue next week. Thanks, again, to Friends of Jones for providing this memorable gift to our Class of 2020 graduates. I think this is going to be a new tradition at JCP!

Cap and Gown Pick-Up and Senior Check-Out
As we approach the end of a very non-traditional and chaotic year we also say good-bye and good luck to our graduating Class of 2020.  During a normal school year we would have a check-out process for graduates to return school property, pay final balances on accounts, and pick-up their caps and gowns.  Outlined below is the check-out process for the Class of 2020 starting on Monday, June 8.  This check-out process will allow students to return any school property still in their possession, collect any of their property still at the school, and pick up their cap and gown, announcements, graduation programs, awards, medical records and diploma.  By adhering to your scheduled check-out date/time, our Covid-19 safety guidelines and the process outlined below we intend to offer a safe and complete check-out process for our seniors.

Schedule for Senior Check-Out
Due to current safety precautions, it is mandatory that you arrive to complete your check-out process ONLY during the hour and date assigned to you.  Please follow the adjacent chart to find the date and time you are expected at Jones to complete your check-out.

Practicing Social Distancing and Safety Precautions
Due to the pandemic, all students will be required to wear a face mask before they are allowed in the lobby of the school.  Students will line-up 6 ft. apart while they wait their turn to complete their check-out.  Students will be closely monitored to ensure they adhere to social distancing guidelines.  No more than 40 students per hour are scheduled to arrive so as not to overcrowd the process.  Students will not be permitted in any part of the school except the south lobby.

Steps During Check-Out Process
During your assigned date/time you will enter the building through the main entrance.  Students will follow the steps below to complete their check-out process:
  1. Turn in any school books/property – a list of property currently checked-out to your student is enclosed. Any items not returned will be added to your student’s account to be paid in full before they can retrieve their check-out materials.
  2. Pay remaining fees on account – an account report is attached listing any fees remaining on your student’s account. This can be paid in advance through Parent Portal (recommended) or in person during the exit process (cash or credit ONLY). Your student’s school account must be paid in full before they can retrieve their check-out materials.
      • Pay current outstanding fees online today through Parent Portal
      • Sign-in to Parent Portal > Family > Fees > Select Desired Fees > Pay Online
      • Your student may also pay any outstanding fees in person during their check-out Cash or credit ONLY, NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED
      • Additional fees may be added at check-out if all property is not returned.
  3. Obtain locker possessions – the locker assigned to your student has been cleared out and marked with their name to be picked up at this time. Students with possessions in a locker not assigned to them will need to arrange to retrieve their possessions from the person that locker was assigned to once underclassmen regain locker access.
  4. Pick-up Exit Materials – The final step in the exit process is to pick-up announcements, your graduation program, senior awards (if applicable), medical records, cap and gown, diploma cover and diploma. Students will have an opportunity to pick-up their yearbook during the summer.
Graduation Fees Waived / Donations Accepted
Due to the economic hardship so many of our families are facing and the changing nature of our graduation celebration, we are waiving the graduation fee for the Class of 2020. Jones will absorb all graduation-related costs (caps and gowns, diploma covers, announcements, etc.), the total cost of which is approximately $50 per graduate.  If you would like to make a donation of any amount to help defray these costs, please click the following link: https://secure.friendsofjones.org/donation.jsp?campaign=24&
