The Community Schools Initiative (CSI) at Jones College Prep Background At the end of the 2007-08 school year Jones College Prep, in partnership with Youth Guidance, a leading youth development organization in Chicago, was designated a Community School by the CPS Office of Extended Learning Opportunities. What is a “Community School”? A “Community School” has many definitions but each school has the flexibility to set their own priorities according to their school's needs. The CSI in CPS is part of a national movement to provide extended hours, services and partnerships to enhance student life, improve student learning and school engagement and strengthen JCP’s family supports. One of the most important goals of the CSI at JCP is to enhance student life. If you have ideas, input, or questions about doing so, please write to abrake@cps.edu! Goals for 2009-10 During 2009-10, the CSI at JCP will provide:
- Extended access to computers and study space in the JCP Student Learning Center, 3:00-4:30pm, everyday after school;
- Additional student leadership, mentorship, volunteer and parent involvement opportunities at JCP and in local elementary schools;
- Additional resources for JCP's student organizations;
- Extra support for teachers to extend their instruction and curriculum beyond the classroom;
- New after-school activities such as dance lessons, video production, photography, student mentorship and leadership programs and MUCH MORE;
- Expanded community, business and university partnerships for student internships, extracurricular activities, and family and student services.
