Benjamin C Dipman
Benjamin C. Dipman earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from St. Olaf College and a Master’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University.
Originally an English education major at St. Olaf, Ben’s direction shifted to journalism. His range of roles as a journalist allows Ben to bring communication theory and practice to his students. As a journalist he has:
• conducted research on ethics in journalism
• published articles in over half a dozen newspapers in Michigan
• written political articles for a Michigan news service whose primary audience was the politicians he was covering
• collected, analyzed, and disseminated statistical data on local campaign finances for the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization
• covered education, politics, and business for the Albert Lea Tribune, a daily newspaper in Minnesota
• designed and laid out editions of the Albert Lea Tribune
• had articles published by the Associated Press that were reprinted in various metropolitan newspapers
While he was a journalist, however, the classroom kept calling Ben’s name. He relented, which is one of the best things he has done. Ben brings a variety of teaching experience to Jones. He spent a year teaching English to Japanese high school students. There, he delved into his favorite aspects of linguistics: morphology, syntax, and semantics. Ben has also taught ESL to Japanese, Chinese, and Latino adults whose jobs required them to speak English. Ben first began teaching in the states at Kennedy High School, on the southwest side of Chicago, where he taught junior and senior English classes.
At Jones, Ben has taught students in ninth through twelfth grades. In 2007, students in his Creative Writing course published a book of poetry through the Chicago Humanities Festival. Currently he teaches freshman English; he loves introducing new literature and forms of writing to the students. He also heads the mentorship program for new Jones teachers, serves on the Assessment team, and mentors students through the Targeted Recruitment Support Program.
Anytime he gets a chance, Ben travels, whether it’s camping for a weekend at a state park, a month at a national park, or in hostels throughout the world. In addition to a majority of the states, he has traveled to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Japan, Ireland, Canada and Mexico. Ben brings these experiences into the classroom as much as possible and encourages all to travel as much as they can. Originally from Minneapolis, Ben has an affinity for lakes, and spends much of his free time rollerblading, biking and running near Lake Michigan. He also regularly attends theatrical and musical events, reads and writes voraciously, plays tennis, and is an amateur photographer.
