Audio Essay of the Week
The Sound of the Page 2010
View public service announcements that criticize advertisements and poetry video essays. The Sound of the Page is an audio project in Ray Salazar's English classes that allows students to demonstrate their critical-thinking skills. The 2010 project focused on two Podcasts. 1. Public service announcements inspired by the "No Comment" section of Ms. Magazine. These PSAs explain how advertisements fail with their humorous attempts. Instead, they reinforce negative stereotypes about women. To view them, click here. Ms. Magazine published a blog post about our work: 2. Poetry video essays that examined four poems: "Storm Windows" by Julia Alvarez "Mexicans in France" by Sandra Cisneros "Rules of Growth" by Rene Ojeda, "City of Angels" by Luis Rodriguez. Students engaged in a close reading of the poems using Vendler's Pleasures of Poetry framework and produced these essays to highlight the artistry behind each piece of work. To experience these, click here. In 2009, AP English Language and Latin American Lit students created audio essays and Podcasts as they blended writing and sound to present experiences or propose assertions. The voice recorders were made possible through the Oppenheimer Foundation and the Friends of Jones. To listen to the audio essays, follow this link. To listen to the When I Was Puerto Rican Podcasts, follow this link. All of this student work is also on iTunes; search "Jones College Prep."
